Tracing family histories can reveal community connections across time, foster a sense of place in the present, and inform a sense of identity for the future. Differing genealogical practices—whether oral stories, physical documents, or digitized records—provide a variety of family and community narratives and often raise more questions than can be answered. Using the history of one St. Peter family, this presentation notes how singular stories are always enmeshed in community histories and details the process of uncovering and understanding how people created and sustained a sense of home through relations to one another and to the lands on which they lived.
