This book was started some ten years ago as a small research project which would essentially combine Ronnie Hughes’s
interest in the history of plantations with Woodville Marshall’s interest in the history of the origins of villages. Over time,
however, both the scope of the book and the number of collaborators were widened; and the end-product
accomplishes a number of larger objectives.
The authors, by explaining the origins of roughly two thousand place names, have provided Barbadians with brief
but reliable information about their places of birth and residence, have provided to both residents and visitors some
snippets of information about familiar and not so familiar places and, as a result, they have ensured that all readers
can absorb some information about a variety of social and economic processes and institutions.
